What to see

The Lake: Lake Bacalar (the lake of seven colors) is 80 kilometers long (approx. 50 miles). Laguna Azul is located at the secluded north end. Within 20 minutes kayak paddle, there are a variety of tiny islands and two small rivers. Directly across the lake from Laguna Azul are several small lagoons. The lake is great for kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing and sailing and, of course, swimming!
A goog variety of birds can be seen at Laguna Azul, including toucans, and at night, because there is no light from any large town nearby, the stargazing ist especially good. The moon rise over the lake is also very nice.

The Caribbean: The Caribbean is about one hour away by car. The sleepy little fishing village Mahajual has seen the development of a cruise ship dock in the last year (2000). Mahajual is the jumping off point for dive trips to the Chinchorro reef.

The Ruins: About 1,5 to 2 hours by car from Laguna Azul are three ruins, including Kohunlich with its spectacular palms and giant stone masks.

Bacalar: The town of Bacalar is about half an hour by car from Laguna Azul. Bacalar has an old Spanish fort near the town square. The beautiful Cenote Azul is located near the south end of town where you can swim and eat.

Chetumal: The town of Chetumal is about one hour by car from Laguna Azul. Chetumal is about one hour by car from Laguna Azul. Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo and contains many beautiful statues and a museum near mercado downtown. You can shop at the mercado for souveniers, hammocks and sarongs.
